The thieves are thick and the days are long Passion slips, or has it just moved on A ramblin' soul on a road unknown You spoke, hold on You pushed me back from the 44 I thought I'd lost to the traffic roar Thought I heard black dogs a' scratchin' at my door You spoke, hold on And the clock bell chimes on the hour at ten Do we rise up just to fall again And still I wonder Where have you gone to my friend? I heard the lies i nthe city walls Along came real folk Out came fakes and bores When did you show your final score She spoke, hold on And the clock bell chimes on the hour at ten Do we rise up just to fall again And still I wonder Where have you gone to my friend?

Weatherman 03:46
I saw a picture of the old dirt road Winding through fields of crimson and gold Far from the wheels of the star machine Out to the spaces that lie in between Weatherman says so fine I believe him this time Let's walk that road see what we can find You kept a small stone by your bedside So pale and so smooth you touched it at night I never understood the promise of small charms There's a coin in my pocket and it's shining so bright Weatherman says so fine I believe him this time Take out your two wheels there's no rain I came back from somewhere smiling Laughing at a joke you told me yesterday Dancing in my head to ancient music A thousand years old and getting young in every way Weatherman says so fine I believe him this time Weatherman says so fine Weatherman says so fine Weatherman says so fine Weatherman says so fine

Caught the last train to this winter station The air is too cold the dream is still real There's rivers that tangle, turn on the flood plain Like sad conversations where all is revealed Was it a smile that came to your eyes As you stumbled punch drunk to the dawn Then the thought that passed, like a spectre at night Was it maybe I'm waltzing too long You tasted the waters that flowed by the mountain So sweet when you're climbing, so sour when you're gone And you broke your back when you weren't even trying Pushing boulders to heaven while your heart pulled back home You woke in a sweat, the gutter seemed warm But hell it's no place to get wrong And you rode the train under the pale moon again Thinkin' maybe I'm waltzing too long Thinkin' maybe I'm waltzing too long There are regrets and there are forgivings If you stand like a statue if you run like a storm It's a minute past six in the land of the living Somewhere there's crying - it goes on too long Did you collide with the pain that you hide And just what are those words to that song Ah you fell to the floor as the band hit the first chord Singin' maybe I'm waltzing too long
4.
I saw that something on your mind I caught you breathing out of time Saw the panic in your eyes Heard the cover up and lies I swear that I won't tell your story now It's not my business anyhow You felt the roadway bend around You felt so light above the ground You felt the salt stream to your eyes You looked for someplace you could hide I swear that I won't tell your story now It's not my business anyhow All that I can do Is to stay here with you You find it hard beyond the door You feel a prisoner in this war With every step you try to take You feel your heart will surely break All that I can do Is to stay here with you

Dark Cafe 03:43
You walk the same mile to the dark cafe Dark cafe means a sense of danger The conversation bores you just the same You stay to feel the growing anger You stare at the door and the dark cafe walls Disappear And here they gather the answers are their friends They know just how the world is thinking Their tonges are razor sharp, their visions have no end They smile with lips too stained from drinking You stare at the door and the dark cafe walls Disappear I cannot understand the words you use The way you use them You talk in circles like the games we played When we were children I want to reach to you Your intellect puts you above me You talk solutions What I'm hearing is hypocrisy The hours melt the smoke is sticking to their skins They've covered heart attack and sorrow They leave on tired legs on needles and on pins They'll save the world again tomorrow You stare at the door and the dark cafe walls Disappear

Sail into harbour, pull your sails down Rest a while on these shores It was so simple before the rain came Simple maybe more There is a path some are walking There is a path some will stall Time for questions, time for talking Sometime no sense at all Two aeroplanes unafraid of how high they are Two aeroplanes wings shake engines roar Two aeroplanes flying in a small room Two aeroplanes fall Sail into harbour pull your sails down Rest a while on these shores It was so simple before the rain came Simple maybe more
7.
There's a light out on the water Where the sailors drift forever When you looked back Did you see me standing on the shore You don't need a tower to make you tall It's a quarter past the hour Nothing's making sense, did it ever Did a siren call you to those rocks Did you end up there Cold and fighting And did you try to fill in all the pieces Did you try to give the love you needed Di you call out When all the mists and mazes confused you once again Were you confused my friend There's a pale moon in the north sky And a tide that's risin' so high Did you fall down to your knees when you heard the news Did you stand in silence, did you refuse to try... To fill in all the pieces Did you try to give the love you needed Did you call out When all the mists and mazes confused you once again Were you confused my friend Take me down to the waters edge We'll look for pearls In the dirty sand And did you try to fill in all the pieces Did you try to give the love you needed Did you call out When all the mists and mazes confused you once again Did you try...... There's a light out on the water

When you strip back all the things you have All possessions all the traps All the fashions old and new Things invented, things held true Under the paint, behind your eyes Do you shed a skin and still wear a disguise? When you take away the greatest fear Things too far away, too near All the things behind a screen All you've captured, all you've freed Under the paint, behind your eyes Do you shed a skin and still wear a disguise? I heard the building falling down Across the street around our town I saw the hammers and the chains Take apart what should remain Under the paint, behind your eyes Do you shed a skin and still wear a disguise? I thought the songs they meant something I thought the chorus could begin I thought it was some kind of grace That kept the runners from the race Under the paint, behind your eyes Do you shed a skin and still wear a disguise?

Winter blows, summers gone I trace the steps on down the path You walked along And you tell your story loud It rises, mingles with the crowd That stay too long And I waited 'til the changing conversation Turned to fire Burnt your bridges made ashes of your life And you say that you're no fool That you're just tired of all the miles of promises That fall so fast from view So you hang your pride so high And keep the next day standing all alone Take the car out for a drive To stop you reaching for the telephone You know I'll see you i the future But until this time is lost I'm just a shadow, beneath the overpass There is nothing I can say To make you feel a different way Just don't play With all the ghosts that haunt you
10.
I went searching through the pieces That had washed up on the sand With a chill wind blowing at my back And time at my command And I wondered at the broken cargo Lying at my feet And I wondered what remained there stolen By the rolling sea And I'll take your hand We'll go to all the places we know And feel whole again And the messengers flew overhead They flew on brittle wings The cries they sound for miles around To no one listening So I wrapped this blanket around me And I headed for the quay Where sails are full and courses true And love's still a mystery And I'll take your hand We'll go to all the places we know And feel whole again Silent stranded Trapped by the tide If you see me I have survived And I'll take your hand We'll go to all the places we know And feel whole again Well you know I may be restless Sometimes I may be cold But you know that there are some things That put restless in your soul And I love your gentle innocence Your strong simplicity And I hate the greed, the anguish They're pushing right at me And I'll take your hand We'll to to all the places we know And feel whole again
11.
Down the faint reckless path again Shoes full of lead and a fame of pretend I saw the drifters and the also-rans In the thunder that brought in the storm They were confident they were proud They're here for the beer They're here for the crowd Voices rang from the first ten rows I heard the angels I couldn't let go In the silence there was light I think I'll stay up all night You say it's a sure thing I'm sure that's all true Let's travel the world with the folk And the blues Let's empty our pockets And miss all the cues In a world that lies safe and becalmed In the silence there was light I think I'll stay up all night You came to me there were tears in your eyes You said you were troubled by the time How it flies Don't worry girl you're not walking alone There's two on this road So let's travel it home In the silence there was light I think I'll stay up all night
12.
It's a mysterious thing Leaves you grounded without wings When all you need to do is fly It's a brave heart That convinces you to start A journey that sometimes tears you apart It's a brace heart It's a kind hand That helps you understand All the levels of the land, when to speak When not to try It's a kind hand The fire lights up You drink from the cup Water or wine It's a mysterious thing It's a strange sea That ruins so dark and deep Beneath the falling feet Of those just walking by It's a strange sea The fire lights up You drink from the cup Water or wine It's a mysterious thing

about

I had just left Sydney band, Eva Trout and had written a new batch of songs. Strange Sea was my first solo album (although I had recorded many tracks over the years on 4 track reel to reel) as I had all my musical life been involved in the collective ideology of bands. Michael Carpenter (who played drums with Eva Trout) a talented multi instrumentalist and songwriter ran a studio which was perfect.

We worked together through the songs, Michael suggesting arrangement and vocal ideas and playing drums and bass (and much more). The songs came together naturally - we recruited additional players and Strange Sea grew.

The title came from family holidays down to the south coast of NSW. One late afternoon I was sitting on a huge rock at a place called Sunshine Bay staring at a very turbulent ocean. I was about 15 years old. What a strange sea I thought. Somehow it stuck and became my metaphor for mass humanity - “the ebb and flow, the strange sea”. The songs echo this.

During the recording, my mother, Mary, passed away after an awful battle with cancer. Things were put on hold. It was sad and devastating. We were very close. One restless night I had a vivid dream where Mum appeared to me. She was smiling and said “It’s been long enough, finish the damn record will you”. I did and Strange Sea was born.

Thank you -

Mick and Matt for encouragement, support and great playing, Dominique, Lindsay, Bob Mannell, Sophie Wheeler, Greg Ryan, Andy Thomas and Rocket Taxi Trucks, friends old and new, my family.... huge love to Donna (for every damn thing... xx)

For Mum, Rod and Kate.

... the ebb and flow, the strange sea.
